Just launched during the London Design Festival 2023 – and on show at the Christopher Farr Shoreditch Studio until 23rd September – we present the new ‘1923’ rug from original artwork of Gunta Stölzl, produced by Christopher Farr.

Bringing context to the piece, we were privileged to have access to the Isokon Flats to photograph the rug in the former residence of Jack and Molly Pritchard who commissioned the architects Wells Coates. The Isokon Flats, which opened in 1934, signalled the birth of Modernism in the UK and was an experiment in new ways of urban living. The Pritchards, not only very forward thinking, were instrumental in assisting and accommodating notable émigrés fleeing pre-war Europe. Isokon residents from this period included: Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus; Marcel Breuer, designer of modernist furniture; and László Moholy-Nagy, head teacher of art at the Bauhaus school.
