ABOUT THIS RUG
A door on the floor. With this rug, metaphor and irony go hand in hand. An exacting artist, Hume saw that a thoughtful examination of the process of rug making, as well as the precise hand-carving of the two circles and rectangles of the design, was necessary in order to produce perfect proportion and tone. The result is a sublimely beautiful one color rug. which at first glance reveals simple geometry and play of light, along with shadows cast by relief elements. Then the fun begins.

Designer

One of the Young British Artists (YBAs) who dominated the UK art scene in the 1990s, Goldsmiths alumnus Gary Hume is known for creating abstract paintings on aluminium panels, using high-gloss industrial paints. After attracting the eye of Charles Saatchi with his Door Paintings (life-size images of hospital doors), Hume went on to represent Britain at the Venice Biennale and the Bienal de São Paulo, was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1996 and was elected to the Royal Academy in 2001. Tate Britain held a career-spanning retrospective of Hume’s work in 2013.
